SNAP takes a new name

At its annual conference, the Society of National Association Publications announced that it will migrate over the next year to a new name: Association Media and Publishing.  The association also said that the new name will be used in full (no acronym).

The change comes at a good time for SNAP, and it reflects the current and continuing growth in the breadth of association publishing.  Magazines, books, websites, blogs, conferences, “lunch and learns”, webinars, print and e-mail newsletters: these are all part of the association media model now.  The old name didn’t limit what SNAP did in practice, but it did put a box around how we think about association “publications”.

I will miss the acronym, though.  I’m funny that way.  Still, that’s a small price for me to pay as a member of an association moving along nicely in the association media space.

Perhaps they’re hoping to crank things up as AMP?

Speaking of acronyms, a friend of mine convinced Beijing University of Science and Technology to change their name to University of Science & Technology, Beijing.

When SNAP announced the new name, they went to some (reasonable) length to say that they would not use an acronym.  I was sad.

SNAP is such a cool acronym, and I was looking forward to variations on AMP, but ... my hopes were dashed.  Maybe a rogue movement will develop, kind of like the wave at baseball games.

I wonder what the Mandarin variation of BUST would be.
