Metadata goes global

With Laura Dawson, I'll be presenting a morning workshop, "Metadata goes global: Making the most of the opportunity" at this year's Frankfurt Book Fair. The session takes place on Thursday, October 11 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

The program is organized by O'Reilly Media as part of its Tools of Change practice area. Registration through the Frankfurt Book Fair is now open, with an opportunity to save 20% if you sign up by this coming Wednesday, August 15.

Laura and I plan to address several inter-related topics, including:

  • What’s happening now in North America, the largest market for digital books?
  • How should we be thinking about rights in a digital environment?
  • What are some innovative approaches to managing across global markets, ensuring product discovery, managing metadata for physical and digital products and clearly communicating worldwide rights?
  • What practical approaches can publishers take to make sure their metadata workflows are effective and up to date?
  • What trends in identifiers, search-engine marketing and content tagging will affect publishers in the next five to ten years?

The morning will include time for discussion and dialogue around these topics.

In building the program, Laura and I are addressing an audience that has a working understanding of what metadata is, how it is currently prepared and why it is an important in book marketing. But if you are missing a few of the basics, we think you'll still get a lot out of the program.
